ScubaFit® Program Now Approved for Both Dive and Fitness Professionals

(DiverWire) ScubaFit® continues to bring fitness to life with the PADI ScubaFit® Diver Distinctive Specialty Course.  The only “fitness for diving” certification for scuba divers has also been recognized by International Sports Sciences Association as 10 continuing education units for personal trainers and fitness instructors.   The course was already approved by PADI to be taught to both dive and fitness professionals.

The collaboration is role modeled by Gretchen M. Ashton, ISSA Elite Trainer and diver, and Stephen Mendel, multi-agency dive instructor trainer, co-authors of the specialty.

“We believe that our collaboration provides the best knowledge, resources and experience to bridge the worlds of diving and fitness. We encourage dive instructors and fitness professionals who select this specialty course to work together whenever possible to enhance the teaching and learning experience for the common good of all divers.”

Dive and fitness professionals interested in teaching physical fitness to scuba divers, may take the course online or attend a seminar.  Upon completion of the course, professionals are listed in a ScubaFit® directory by region so that student divers interested in fitness for diving can locate an instructor.
ScubaFit® presents a unique opportunity to improve the health and safety of all divers and bring new fitness-conscious divers into the sport. The program provides a new profit center for dive centers by tapping into the enormous fitness industry.  One of the simplest marketing concepts is for dive shops to network with fitness centers and have a team of professionals teaching divers how to make the most of the sport through a healthy lifestyle.  Fit individuals are more likely to participate in recreational activity and fit divers are more likely to advance their training and dive more often.

To continue diver motivation, Gretchen has also released the first in a series of FitDiver® mobile apps for diver fitness, which provide additional workouts for the specialty.

Dive center owners, and dive and fitness instructors who are interested in completing the certification may visit the ScubaFit® website for more information and a link to the online course.

The ultimate physical fitness recommendation for scuba divers is to be in excellent health; free from disease, medical conditions and injury.  Divers often have difficulty maintaining this clean slate.  It is important for divers to know how to become and remain physically fit, prevent illness and injury, and rehabilitate and manage conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, and obesity.

Important to the success of any health and fitness program for divers is a good support group for the participant.  ScubaFit® recommends an annual examination with a physician for all divers.

Health professionals interested in dive medicine or referring patients to instructors may contact Gretchen at (760) 271-6069.

The purpose of the PADI ScubaFit® Diver Distinctive Specialty Course is to teach divers who are new to fitness an effective approach towards the establishment of a foundation of general fitness and fitness specific to diving, as well as an understanding of the physical demands of diving. This specialty familiarizes divers with the skills, knowledge, planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems, hazards and enjoyment of being physically fit for diving.  Divers learn how fitness improves diving performance and reduces the risk of injury and illness. For those divers with experience and knowledge of general fitness, in addition to the above mentioned topics, they will learn activity specific exercises and training concepts that will enhance all their diving activities. All divers are also given an introduction to the basics of nutrition and the necessity of maintaining hydration during diving.
