Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and REEF to Host Inaugural Lionfish Derbies

NOAA’s Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, in partnership with Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF), will host an inaugural series of lionfish derbies starting in September. Divers who remove lionfish from sanctuary waters will be eligible for more than $10,000 in cash and prizes.

(DiverWire.com) - The venomous lionfish is native to the Indo-Pacific Region, and is therefore, an invasive species everywhere else. Summer underwater cleanup a Success in Bonaire

A few weeks ago, 50 divers and snorkelers descended upon Kralendijk Bay for the Dive Friends Bonaire/NetTech summer underwater cleanup.  This cleanup focused upon the yacht anchorage south and north of the Dive Friends @ Yellow Submarine dive facility.

Little Chance of Oil Spill Reaching Florida Keys

The head of the U.S. Government's response effort to mitigate the Transocean/BP oil spill said that with the oil leak capped there is now little chance of oil remnants reaching the Florida Keys and the South Florida mainland.
